Sea Harrier F/A.2 ZA176 / "R" Walkaround |
| |
These walkaround pictures were taken of ZA176 at the Newark Air Museum in October 2004. The aircraft had only been on site for about a month at this stage, and some of the pieces had yet to be delivered by the Royal Navy. I believe there was some confusion as to what state the aircraft was being sold in, however I understand this has now been resolved and the aircraft is awaiting some components and panels to make it look more complete. With the aircraft missing these parts I got a chance to photograph some of the internal details.

Port canopy detail. |

Front quarter view of the nose gear. I'm unsure what the disconnected linkage is in the foreground. |

Nose gear, note the RBF tag and data plates on the gear leg. |
.JPG)
The port intake with FOD cover in place. |
.JPG)

Opened panel just forward of the port "cold" jet nozzle. |

Port Starboard wing detail showing the fences and vortex generators to good effect. |

Port outrigger, again notice the data plates in black and silver. |
.JPG)
"F-16" style strengthening plates between the engine nozzles. |
.JPG)
Main gear, illustrating the tyres well, which should be useful to modellers. |
.JPG)
Open panel on the port site of the rear empennage. Note the avionics boxes that would be mounted here have been removed. |
.JPG)
Ventral airbrake detail. |
.JPG)
A closer view of the airbrake area and anti-collission light. |
.JPG)
The vertical fin, showing the pitot tube and cover. |
.JPG)
Port view of the ventral fin, illustrating various lumps and aerials. |
.JPG)
An interesting view of the rear "puffer" jets used for control at low airspeed and whilst in the hover. The covers have been removed showing the actuators. |

A starboard view of the vertical fin. |

The starboard "hot" nozzle area, showing more strengthening plates and the blast shield. |

A more detailed look at the starboard blast shield. |

One of the auxiliary blow in doors on the starboard side. |
.JPG)
Starboard view of the nose gear strut. |
.JPG)
Starboard canopy details, also showing the intake demarcation line. |

The starboard intake showing the large open interior space occupied normally by the Pegasus engine. |
.JPG)
A view of the starboard nose showing some of the RBF tags and intake/vent covers. |
Pegasus Engine |
.JPG)
A front quarter view of the aircraft's Pegasus engine. |
.JPG)
Another view of the engine, showing the various items mounted on top of the engine casing so they can be accesses while the engine is still mounted in the aircraft. |
.JPG)
The rear "hot" section of the engine. It looks remarkable simple down at this end in comparison to the front! |
Gear Bays |
.JPG)
The nose gear bay viewed as if looking back down the centre line of the aircraft. |
.JPG)
Another view with a slightly larger field of view. I believe the red item is a locking device to keep the gear locked in place for maintenance. |
.JPG)
The main gear well, looking from the starboard side. |
.JPG)
Main gear strut, tyres and gear doors. |
.JPG)
Main gear strut and another gear locking device in red. |
.JPG)
A further view of the main gear well, notice the control panel of some sort. |
.JPG)
Notice the weathering and dirtying in the main gear bay. |
.JPG)
The main gear door. I assume this started off white! |
Engine Bay |
.JPG)
A starboard to port view of the upper area of the engine bay. Taken through the "hole" where the starboard "cold" nozzle should be. |
.JPG)
Another view from the starboard side, showing the detail on the forward bulkhead, useful for any modellers wanting to open up the top engine maintenance panels. |
.JPG)
The rear upper wall of the engine bay, showing various pipes and wires. |
.JPG)
A port to starboard view of the front of the engine bay. |
.JPG)
The starboard upper engine bay detail, useful for adding detail to the Tamiya Sea Harrier in 48th scale. |
.JPG)
Again the rear bulkhead, this time of the starboard side. |
.JPG)
A view from the port side looking forward through to the starboard intake. Notice the blow in doors. |
