Notes
Mirage 2000-02 is a good representative of one of the early Mirage 2000 prototypes fitted with the original taller and narrower tail fin and lacking various other features of production aircraft. The first three prototypes (2000-01,02 and 03) were all fitted with this tail, however after testing showed a re-design was needed, all three aircraft were retro-fitted with the revised tail used on production aircraft. The configuration of these prototypes varied quite considerably as they progress through the testing phase. Aircraft 03 was the first to sport a radar and radome as opposed to the "solid" nose containing test equipment and associated access panels. Prototype 04 is described separately under the next entry.

Colour Schemes:
Initially flown in a natural metal scheme with red trim lines over the intakes and a patriotic blue/white/red rudder, the prototype was later painted all over white with blue and red trim.

Notes
Mirage 2000-04 was the closest prototype to production standard and includes all the aerodynamic refinements made during the evolution of the prototype aircraft. The aircraft was the first to be built with the revised fin and Karman fairings rather than having these retro fitted. The aircraft also had the RDM radar fitted after initially being built with the "solid" nose. This aircraft participated in a lot of trails work, particularly the weapons and weapon systems. The aircraft also served as a test bed during the evolution of the Mirage 2000-5 and was used to test the MICA missiles.

Colour Schemes:
This aircraft was first flown in a natural metal scheme with no markings except "Mirage 2000 04" under the cockpit. When the aircraft was used to test the MICA missile for the Mirage 2000 -5 it received the standard air defence scheme of the C/B however with a camouflaged radome instead of the standard black/grey.

Notes

Mirage 2000C S1

The Mirage 2000C S1 was the first production block of the Mirage 2000. These aircraft were fitted with an early RDM radar that lacked the CW illuminator required to guide the Super 530F missile, therefore initially these aircraft were equipped just with Magic missiles and the DEFA cannon to conduct their air defence role. The black painted radome denoted the lack of the CW illuminator and despite some early S1 aircraft did physically carry the Super 530 for publicity shots, they could not have fired it. Self defence equipment comprised of the Serval RWR system, Sabre Jammer and Eclair Chaff/Flare dispenser. These aircraft were capable of carrying and using the IFR probe, however most pictures show the aircraft without it fitted.

Mirage 2000C S2

The Mirage 2000C S2 was a slight improvement on the S1 in that its RDM radar was tweaked to provide better "look-down" capability. Apart from this change, the S2 is identical to the S1 block.

Mirage 2000C S3

The Mirage 2000C S3 introduced the CW illuminator to the RDM radar, finally allowing the aircraft to fire and guide the Super 530F missile. The radomes on these aircraft were painted grey to denote the presence of the CW illuminator. These aircraft were capable of carrying and using the IFR probe and it was fitted most of the time as on the later AdlA Mirage 2000 variants.

Mirage 2000C S3 Upgrade

The Mirage 2000C S3 Upgrade designation refers to S3 aircraft that have had surplus RDI radars fitted which were made available from S4/S5 aircraft being upgraded to -5F standard.

Colour Schemes:
These aircraft were all finished in the air defence scheme, with S1s and S2s having black radomes and the S3s having grey radomes.

Sub Types: Mirage 2000B S3 Upgrade (See Notes Section)

Similar to : Other Mirage 2000Bs.

Notes

The Mirage 2000B was designed as a fully combat capable twin seat conversion trainer, sacrificing the internal cannon and some fuel capacity of the single seater for the rear cockpit. The Mirage 2000B has gone through a similar evolution to is single seat cousins, in that its radar, engine and defensive systems have been upgraded gradually. The main modification to the fuselage was a raised spine that runs down the length of the aircraft from the rear of the aft cockpit to the jammer fairing under the rudder. This spine required the engine bleed air outlet to be moved to two flush exhausts on either side of the spine.

The Mirage 2000B S3 was the first production variant of the Mirage 2000B (after the Mirage 2000B-01 prototype) and it features an equipment set very similar to the early Mirage 2000C. This S3s were delivered with the early RDM radar, the Serval RWR system and the Eclair-Alkan LL5062 chaff/flare dispenser could also be fitted under the rear fuselage. It is unclear whether any of the aircraft carried the Sabre ECM system in the fairing under the rudder, however some pictures clearly show the Sabre missing and being replaced with a plain, rounded fairing.

Mirage 2000B S3 Upgrade

Some Mirage 2000B S3s were upgraded with surplus RDI radars, and these aircraft are designated "Mirage 2000B S3 Upgrade".

Sub Types: Mirage 2000B S4-2 (See Notes Section)

Similar to : Other Mirage 2000Bs.

Notes

The Mirage 2000B S4 is similar in configuration to the S3, however with the RDI radar (designated RDI J1-1) fitted from the outset. The purpose of this was to keep the aircraft as similar to the "frontline" 2000C S4/S5 variants as possible. However these aircraft retained the M53-5 engine (as opposed to the Mirage 2000C S4/S5's M53-P2 engine).

Mirage 2000B S4-2

Only two Mirage 2000B S4-2 were built and both were fitted with the RDI J2-4 radar. One aircraft was fitted with the "standard" M53-5 engine and was delivered to an operational unit whereas the other aircraft had the later M53-P2 engine and was delivered to the CEAM evaluation unit.

Sub Types: None.

Similar to : Other Mirage 2000Bs.

Notes

The Mirage 2000B S5 is the definitive version (for the time being) of the AdlA's Mirage 2000B. The aircraft is fitted with the latest RDI radar (RDI J3-13) as fitted to the latest Mirage 2000C S5s and also the later M53-P2 engine making it one of the most capable of the first generation twin seat fighter versions.

Some sources state these aircraft were not fitted with Spirale and instead relied upon the under fuselage Alkan LL5062 dispenser, however I have since seen many pictures of aircraft fitted with Spirale, therefore either these sources were incorrect or Spirale has been retrofitted.

Similar to : Mirage 2000B (Airframe only), Mirage 2000N K2.

Notes

The Mirage 2000N (N for Nucléaire, Nuclear) was developed to carry the ASMP nuclear stand off missile and provide a nuclear deterrent role to the French armed forces. The aircraft was originally called the Mirage 2000P (P for Pénétration, Penetration) and was based on the proven Mirage 2000B airframe. The initial prototypes (Mirage 2000N 01 and 02) were modified Mirage 2000Bs with the main airframe changes being a strengthening of the wing and wing to fuselage areas to allow the aircraft to operate in the punishing low level environment

The aircraft also had the ground attack optimised Antilope 5 radar fitted along with a complete rework of the mission avionics including "missionising" the rear cockpit for use by a Navigator/WSO. Provision for the ASMP stand off nuclear missile was also made on the centerline pylon . The only other stores carried by the K1 were Matra Magic IR missiles for self defense and RPL541/542 drop tanks, both carried under the wing. Defensive systems remained largely as the Mirage 2000B/C however the N features are larger fairing for the Serval RWR system on the front of the fin and the 2000B/C's Sabre jammer was also replaced with the Caméléon jammer.

Colour Schemes:
All of the operational aircraft were finished with green/grey camouflage scheme on the top sides with ligh grey undersides and black radomes.

Sub Types: None.

Similar to : Mirage 2000B (Airframe only), Mirage 2000N K1, Mirage 2000D.

Notes

The Mirage 2000 K2 is identical to the Mirage2000 K1 except is has the capability to carry some conventional weapons in addition to retaining the capability to carry and fire the ASMP nuclear missile. The Mirage 2000 K2 can carry an array of unguided bombs, unguided rockets and weapon dispensers however it cannot carry guided bombs/missiles like the Mirage 2000D. The weapons carried by the K2 include:

  • BAP 100 anti-runway bomblets/dispenser.
  • BAP 120 anti-personnel & anti-armor bomblets/dispenser.
  • BLG 66 Belouga cluster bombs.
  • SAMP 551lb general purpose bombs.
  • Mk.82 500lb general purpose bombs
  • Matra 150 series 68mm rocket pods (18 rockets per pod).

Many of these weapons are carried on the four fuselage pylons which were not carried by the Mirage 2000 K1 but were developed for the K2 and Mirage 2000D.

The K2 was also fitted with Spirale chaff/flare dispensers during manufacturer replacing the Alkan LL5062 carried on the K1. Later Mirage 2000N K2s have carried the SAMIR DDM missile launch detector on the rear of specially modified wing (outer) AAM pylons.

Radar: Antilope 53C/D
RWR: ICMS Mk.2/Serval
ECM : Caméléon.
Chaff/Flare Dispensers : Spirale & Spine Mounted .

Similar to : Mirage2000B (Airframe), Mirage 2000N K2 .

Notes

The Mirage 2000D is a conventional strike/attack aircraft continuing on from the Mirage 2000N K2. As the Mirage 2000D was purpose built as a conventional strike aircraft it features several advances over previous models attack models. The airframe is the standard strengthened twin seater, as used for the Mirage 2000Ns however the spine has been very slightly widened to house an array of chaff/flare dispensers. This has resulted in the flush engine bleed air outlets being moved to a "wedge" shaped fairing similar to that mounted on the fuselage of the single seaters.

Defensive systems include the ICMS MK.2 RWR system with Superhet sensors on the tail, a Caméléon jammer in the under rudder fairing, Spirale/spine mounted chaff/flare dispensers and SAMIR DDM missile launch detectors mounted on the rear of the AAM pylons.

The radar fitted is the Antilope 5 as fitted to the Mirage 2000Ns however this time it has been upgraded to the 53C/D standard providing a terrain following capability down to 90M AGL at 520Kts. The avionics fit of the Mirage 2000D is quite different from the N model with a new central processor, GPS (with INS integration), a new radio system, removal of the ASMP interface and a new stores management system. This has resulted in some cockpit changes, including new displays for the stores management system.

The Mirage 2000D can carry a range of laser guided stores, in addition to the unguided stores carried by the Mirage 2000N K2. These include the AS.30L, BGL 1000 (LGB), GBU-12 (LGB) and the APACHE. The Mirage 2000D also carries an appropriate designator pod on the starboard "chin" pylon, either the PDL-CTS pod or the ATLIS pod depending on requirements.

Colour Schemes:
All of the operational aircraft were finished in a green/grey wraparound camouflage scheme with dark green radomes.

Notes

The Mirage 2000DAD is twin seat conversion trainer for the UAE Air Force and has a similar capability to the UAE's single seat Mirage 2000 EAD and RAD. These aircraft have the Elettronica SAMET defensive system installed in place of the French equipment featured in other models. This system comprises of the ELT/158 RWR and the ELT/558 jammer and is also fitted to the Mirage 2000 UAE's EADs/RADs. The UAE's Mirage 2000s are among the few export Mirage 2000s to carry the IFR probe.

Despite being designated the Mirage 2000DAD, the aircraft is directly related to the Mirage 2000B and not the AdlA's Mirage 2000D. (This also applies to Peru's Mirage 2000DP).

Colour Schemes:
The aircraft, like their single seater counterparts carry either a sand/brown "desert" scheme or an "air defense" scheme of bluey grey/grey. Both schemes feature a black radome.
