Mirage 2000 Weapons

This section of the article is intended to help you arm your Mirage 2000 model accurately and also provide some detail on the weapons concerned and their availability in 1/48. When creating this set of weapon tables I was faced with a dilemma of whether to show all possible loads or just a list of common loadouts. A good example would be the attachment of Air-to-Ground stores to an AdlA Mirage 2000C S1 and while this was physically possible it would not be done in reality, with the exception of test loads on prototypes(in fact most stores use common attachment lugs so most stores can be physically attached to most aircraft however the aircraft may not be capable of actually using that weapon) .

Essentially, for the purposes of building an accurate model, it is best to stick with loadouts that you have pictorial evidence of so therefore all of the following loadouts are generated from my photograph collection. It is perfectly possible that you can find some pictures of loadouts not shown here, and I'd be pleased to receive this information (E-mail)and add it to this page. This means that some widely documented loads for example the Mirage 2000N K2 and D being armed with rocket pods are not in the table, as I have never seen a picture of such a loadout.

RPL-522

Diagram:

Type: Drop Tank (Reservoir Pendulaire)

Notes:
Carried on all types of Mirage 2000, this is a1300 litre (343 US gallon; 286 Imp gallon) fuel tank.

1/48 Sources :

There is no accurate copy of this tank included in any of the 1/48 kits with the exception of the Airfix Mirage 2000B, which is now hard to find. The tank is available in resin from Daco (I have never seen or located this product personally)

I have made and cast my own RPL-522 and I also know of at least one other modeller who has cast a RPL-522 tank for possible sale in the near future. Please contact me for more information in the mean time.

RPL-541/542

Diagram:

Type: Drop Tank (Reservoir Pendulaire)

Notes:
Carried on most later Mirage 2000 types, especially the 2000C S4/S5, -5F, N, D and -5/-9 variants. The tank is carried under the main wing pylons.

1/48 Sources :

This tank is included in the Heller Mirage 2000N kits and is also available in resin from the French company "FabFlight".

Matra Magic II (R.550)

Diagram:

Type: Air-to-Air Missile (And Related Training Stores)

Notes:

Magic II (Top).

Inert Magic II (Middle).

Magic II ACMI Pod (Bottom).

Carried on all types of Mirage 2000 this is a short ranged infrared guided missile in a similar class to the AIM-9 Sidewinder. Where Magic II is shown, the aircraft can also carry the Magic training stores which are also shown above.

1/48 Sources :

These missiles are closely associated with the Mirage 2000 and are therefore included in every 1/48 kit produced, however the quality and accuracy of these kit provided missiles often leaves a lot to be desired. The Airfix/Heller kits feature the most accurate Magic IIs with the Esci/Italeri missiles being badly out of proportion and nearly useless (but they can be used for conversion to inert Magic IIs or ACMI pods). Fortunately there are some superb 1/48 Magic IIs (perfect dimensions, nice detail and clear nose) in the Revell/Monogram Rafale kits.

Super 530F & 530D

Diagram:

Type: Air-to-Air Missile

Notes:

This is a SARH (Semi Active Radar Homing) medium range air-to-air missile in a similar class to the AIM-7 Sparrow. The missile could no be carried by very early Mirage 2000Cs as they lacked the correct radar illuminator for guide the missile. The missile will be phased out of use as the Mirage 2000 S3/S4/S5 are replaced by the Rafale in AdlA service.

The Super 530F is used on aircraft with the RDM radar (C S3 and most export versions) and the Super 530D is used with the RDI radar (C S4/S5). The missiles are identical for modelling purposes.

1/48 Sources :

In a similar situation to the availability of Magic IIs, these missiles are provided in most Mirage 2000 kits, however the quality is not always fantastic. Unlike the Magic II there is no "third party" kit to borrow these missiles from. The Super 530s in Heller's Mirage 2000C kit are by far the best detailed and it is best to use these if possible.

MICA

Diagram:

Type: Air-to-Air Missile

Notes:

This missile is available in two variants, the MICA R and the MICA IR. The MICA R is an active medium range air-to-air missile in a similar class to the AIM-120 AMRAAM. The missile is compatible with the RDY radar and is therefore carried by second generation Mirage 2000s (-5 &-9 variants).

The MICA IR is based on the same body however it is IR as opposed to radar guided. It is unclear which Mirage 2000s (if any) can carry the MICA IR, however only the French currently have this weapon (to be employed by the Rafale). It is possible the UAE will receive MICA IRs with their Mirage 2000 -9 order.

1/48 Sources :

The sole source for the MICA is the Revell/Monogram Rafale kits, as these both feature a pair of MICA Rs which could be modified to MICA IRs by sanding the nose to a more rounded profile and adding a seeker window at the tip of the missile.

Mk.82 GP Bomb

Diagram:

Type: Free Fall General Purpose Bomb

Notes:

The Mk.82 LDGP bomb is one of the most common "dumb" bombs and is used by many air forces on many different aircraft types.

The Mk.82 is a member of the Mk.8X series of bombs which vary in size from the 250lb Mk.81 to the 2000lb Mk.84. The Mk.82 is a 500lb weapon The weapon can be carried by most of the later and export Mirage 2000 family.

1/48 Sources :

As the Mk.82 is so common it is included in many aircraft kits, weapon sets and also produced as an aftermarket accessory in resin. The number of sources for this weapon are so great it is not possible to list them all, however the most plentiful sources are:

  • Hasegawa Weapon Set A (x18)
  • Academy F-111E ( x12)
  • Scaledown BRU & Mk.82s (x12)
  • Verlinden Mk.82s (x12)

LBF-2

Diagram:

Type: Practice Bomb Carrier/Dispenser

Notes:

The LBF-2 is a practice bomb dispenser that can carry up to 4 small practice bombs that have similar ballistic qualities to the full size store they are intended to simulate. The LBF-2 carrier itself is also designed to simulate the weight and drag of a bomb to enhance the realism of training. This "weapon" is purely a training store and has no combat role.

1/48 Sources :

There is no source of the LBF-2 is 1/48 scale.

ASMP

Diagram:

Type: Medium Range Air-To-Ground Nuclear Missile

Notes:

ASMP is as acronym of Air-Sol Moyenne Portée (Air-to-Ground, Medium Range) and is a nuclear missile carried by the AdlA's Mirage 2000Ns. One weapon can be carried externally on the centerline pylon and the weapon is carried by other types such as the Mirage IVP and the Etendard.

1/48 Sources :

There is only one way to obtain the ASMP in 1/48th and that is the kit provided item in the Heller Mirage 2000N (both boxings) kit.
